  • Chocolate-Banana Smoothie with Medjool Dates

How do you avoid eating something that’s bad for you the morning? Make your breakfasts interesting and full of flavor. Fruity and tart one day, spicy and earthy another. Today I’ll share an original smoothie recipe with you. Enjoy!

    chocomedjooldats

    SERVINGS 2

    • 1 ripe medium banana
    • 4 medjool dates, pitted
    • 1 tsp of cocoa or dark chocolate powder
    • 5 tbps of plain unsweetened yogurt
    • 1 cup of soy, almond or rice milk
    • 1-2 tbps of whey protein powder
    • 1/2 tsp of cinnamon powder
    • 2-3 cubes of ice
    • 1 tbsp of LSA (linseed and almond meal) (for taste and omega-3)

    Instructions
Just add all the ingredients in a blender, control the consistency of the smoothie with the non-dairy milk, and once it’s all blended, enjoy your earthy smoothy for the fall.

Cinnamon – Helps to regulate blood sugar, lowers cholesterol, and helps with yeast infections (among other benefits).

Chocolate – You have heard that moderate amounts of dark chocolate is good for your heart, but now there are studies done in the field of neurology that is pointing to the chocolate-brain health connection.

Medjool Dates – They are mostly carbs, but these are high in potassium, which helps in regulating your electrolyte levels.

  • Are You Skinny Fat?

It’s hard being an ex-fatty. I am very aware that the weight and size issue is a very sensitive topic for women, and thus making it a point to notice “fat” is a rather awkward experience. Awkward even when you’re not doing it to judge people but to understand the connection between body shape expressions in relation to people’s local diet.

[wide]muffintop[/wide] Over the past few months, I have been in Manila stuffing my face with friends and my father, who are beyond being just foodies. My friends go for volume, and there’s nothing dad looks forward to more than eating good food — Manila is just the culinary sin city that hits all our spots.

From USDA prime rib eyes to chunks and chunks of fatty roasted pork a lá léchon (excuse the fake French on a Spanish word), the Filipino capital is a city that serves lots of saturated fat and refined carbohydrates.

I feel like I’ve piled on 10 tons in a few short days, but while I’m eating to a point of frustrating discomfort, I was also sitting and observing body shapes of people walking by.

In busy Manila, people are bustling around like scattering ants!

    The Skinny Fat Syndrome

In an article written by Dr. Mark Hyman, he warns people of the dangers of skinny fat, because it can lead to health problems like Type 2 diabetes, even if you are in the “healthy” weight range.

What I noticed was lots of women with slim limbs and a very odd phenomenon of bellies that they let hang over their pants without sucking them in. At first, I thought it was just a few ladies, but then after seeing literally thousands of women in Manila, it seems that the belly thing is a very prominent feature of the women who live in this glorious city.
    Skinny-Fat1
I even got several men to do the observation with me, and it’s been (and I hate to say this but it’s a fact that men find bellies funny on ladies), the guys chuckled, laughed, shook their heads.

Overweight women obviously have a lot going on in the jiggly department, but what’s interesting is a lot of petite, slim Filipinas sporting hanging bellies beneath their clothes. The correct term is called “muffin tops” and it looks kind of like this.
    muffin-top
This scene is EVERYWHERE in Manila, like some kind of mini obesity horror movie. It is such a curious phenomenon that I find this to be a very defining feature of Filipina masses.

In Malaysia, Singapore and Hong Kong, you kind of find consistencies overall. Slim women are just slim all over, with flat bellies. Pudgy women are pudgy all over, usually with a wide waist but the hanging muffin toppery? Not a common sight. But “muffin toppery” is a Filipina feature. That’s not to say all Filipina women have them.

The pretty ladies who work in entertainment or casinos obviously have very nice figures, but just in general women who walk around malls and the streets have them.

    The Diet Connection

    350px-Philippine_Food
Filipinos eat one of the most unhealthiest diets I’ve ever seen. Fatty pork and meats that are high in saturated fats, high sodium, and lots of chemicals, sugar in their seasoning and drinks. They also do a lot of refined carbs like noodles, rice, and breads. They do lots of processed foods. All you need to do is go to a supermarket here and there would be aisles and aisles of flour-based packaged biscuits, cakes, and canned meats.

But the biggest factor I think is that they don’t eat enough fruit and vegetables. Everything is processed. They don’t pack in stuff that nourishes and rejuvenates their cells. Their diets are full of oxidants, not antioxidants. That’s why cancer rates are very high in the Philippines, but more so, people are getting them and dying at a very young age. Just a few days ago, a friend’s cousin died from colon cancer. He was 27 years old.

I’ll go into more of the diet thing one of these days.

So without interviewing experts and looking at studies and data, my suspicion is that the reason why many Filipinas are overweight, and their skinny women have muffin tops has to do with:-

    a) Refined carbs
    b) Saturated fat
    c) Chemicals and preservatives
    d) Sugar (hyperinsulinism)
    e) Salt (it preserves whatever is inside your body – think of mummification of your insides!)

Saying that, the celebrities in the Philippines look delish. Here’s Anne Curtis, the half Aussie-Filipina actress, model and VJ who is just about on every magazine cover, billboard ad for SMDCA, and endorsements.
    annecurtis

She really needs to share how she eats with the ladies in the Philippines.

  • Blueberry-Banana Smoothie with Protein

This high protein, nutritious, antioxidant-rich blueberry-banana smoothie is super-delicious! Plus, it lasted 3 hours before I got hungry for some solid food.

    blueberry1

    SERVES 2

    • 3/4 cup of blueberries
    • 1 medium ripe banana
    • 1 cup of plain unsweetened yogurt
    • 2 ice cubes
    • 1-2 tablespoons of protein powder
    • 1/2 cup soy, rice or almond milk
    • 1 tbsp of almond and flaxseed meal or LSA (linseed and almond meal)
    • A drop of Vanilla essence (optional)
    • 1 tsp of raw honey (optional)

    Instructions

Throw all the ingredients above into a blender and blend. If the smoothie is too thick, just add a steady stream of soy, rice or almond milk to get it to the consistency you like, and enjoy.

  • Post Weight-Loss Experiment (I Was Right About Gluten)

It’s August. A year exactly since I lost 12 kg and weighed 73 kg. The bad news is, since January 2013 I have gone back to a fairly normal way of eating, ingesting things that I was convinced was bad for me, but nevertheless wanted to prove myself wrong the second time around.

    993907_10152417293835995_1301715084_n
Boy was I right the first time around. So I don’t weigh the svelt 68 kg anymore, but the good news is, I still weigh the same as I did a year ago after having lost 12kg. The miraculous part is, I have been stuffing myself like Empress Dowager for the past 7 months and been working out way too little.

It is a wonder I am not back to being the 85kg fatty. God has been full of grace and good to me.

So how do I feel about that? BAD. Very bad. I don’t mean the guilt of putting back 4kgs on since November 2012 (although there is some of that), but physically, I felt really sick being back on a diet that includes refined carbs, gluten, and msg-laden Asian food. “Unwell” would be a better word to describe how I felt back on the common diet.

I wish it weren’t true. I wish I could eat all the French pastries as long as it’s a little morsel and go back to being a foodie, and everything will be fine as long as I watched my portions. Bullpoop. The thing with refined carbs is that one bite is never enough, and you just want to eat more and more of it. I’m sure the devil was given rights to wheat.

I think if I don’t have full-on Celiac disease, at the very least I have a very visible form of gluten intolerance. The kind that a croissant a day can causes 3kgs of weight gain in a week. The kind that makes me bloated, unable to offload my bio-cargo normally, produce enough gas to power a village, and feel downright nervous, moody, anxious and just sickly.
    youtiao
A few days ago, I saw these long Chinese fried donuts Youtiao or Cha Kuay at a local stall, and I just had to have it. It’s crispy on the outside, and chewy on the inside, and it’s absolutely wonderful with a bit of coconut jam spread in between. What happened?

5 minutes of pleasure, 4 days of suffering!

My stomach bloated like an African child with beri-beri, and I had to do a detox on day 4 just to get it out of my system. You know what? Instant relief after I got it out.

How could I have eaten so much of something that acts like a poison to my system? Why are such delicious things so bad for me?

    WHAT’S THE PLAN NOW?

Well, it’s clear I can’t take wheat products without paying for it in the form of thunder thighs, pot bellies, and mood swings. So I will go back to what made me feel really good.

A clean diet that is abundant in fresh fruits and vegetables (70% raw), with organic sources of protein. Sans-wheat and gluten-free. I’ll also step up with the exercise as I don’t feel good physically when I feel weak.

There is a renewed private goal. This time around, I know what works and doesn’t work, and I’ll share that with you as I go through my journey.

Wisdom: Believe in good things, be gentle with yourself when you mess up, get back on track, and do your best to live the life that makes you happiest. 🙂

  • Zucchini Noodles with Cherry Tomatoes

    [wide]zucchininoodles[/wide]

If you live at a place where Zucchinis aren’t throat-cuttingly expensive, here’s a recipe that will help speed up your metabolism and also give you that almost pasta/noodle-like effect without all the gluten and grain in there. It’s Paleo-friendly, low-calorie, and very healthy; an all around wonderful quick-recipe for busy people with busy lives.

    Zucchini Noodles with Cherry Tomatoes

    Serves 1
Prep & cooking time: 15 minutes

2 medium zucchinis, grated into thin strips (with skin on)
2 tbsp of chopped fresh garlic
    1 cup cherry tomatoes, halved
    1 tbsp extra-virgin olive oil
1/2 tsp of dried mixed herbs
    1-2 tablespoon of tomato paste
salt and black pepper to taste
sprinkle of sunflower seeds or pine nuts

    Instructions

Heat a large pan until hot, then add your olive oil. When the oil begins to smoke, add your chopped garlic and fry till golden brown. Then add your zucchini strings, herbs, salt, and continue frying at high heat. Put in your tomato paste, and mix thoroughly. After about 30 seconds, add your cherry tomatoes and continue stir-frying. Remove from heat after 3 minutes and serve with a pine of sunflower seeds or pine nuts.

Tip: Use a regular cheese grater instead of a Japanese grater for thicker, spaghetti-like noodles.

    Voila!

  • How To Power Dress for Work with Eunice Lucero, Managing Ed of StyleBible.ph

    style5

Two months ago (I know, you can smack my behind for sitting on it), I was in Manila for the Google Meetup for Entrepreneurs Women on the Web Summit, organized by GBG Makati.

The summit gave a lot of interesting insights, and among them was how fashion was more forward in the Philippines that it is in Malaysia and Singapore, in my humble opinion. (They’re not afraid to show cleavage in their fashion photos for example.)

While I like nice looking clothes and things, I’ve never been a designer label name-dropping nona. I was however very confounded by the beautiful Eunice Lucero, Managing Editor of StyleBible.ph.

Today what I want to share is what Miss Lucero taught the ladies; you have to know how to mix girly femininity with some power dressing.

    Power Dressing Trends

Eunice shared in her presentation a number of looks and trends that are in-style. Austere, clean-lines with fabrics that are grayscale in tones, yet has a subtle difference to it works well to transform a woman into an executive to be taken seriously.

    leisurer2

She also shared a slide about the different looks that work for women in different professions and lines. From sexy corporate to creative boheme, the variety gave a sense that work fashion isn’t just a cookie-cutter look. You can definitely personalize it based on your personality, and nature of profession, but the underlying message was…

You should care about how you present yourself in the workplace.

    style3
How you do it does make an impression on people. I just got the impression that if you don’t own your look, your look will own you. What you wear and how you wear it will tell people if you’re thought-forward or behind the times!

    MAKEUP

Eunice also touched on how makeup can help get you the right “professional” attention.

    Power Lips

    style4
She showed pictures of some power lip looks that were inspired by Paul Smith and Prada. If you want people to look at and listen to you when you speak, keep the lips bold, by using a passionate matte red.

    Power Eyes

    style2
She also shared to keep the eyeshadow lean, and the lips bold. Or the other way around… bold eyes and soft lips. You could do the non-clubby smokey look inspired by Lanvin, or the ladylike-eyeliner look from Elie Saab and Stella McCartney shown above.

    Power Brows and Face

    style1
For your brows, keep them thick and not thin, like the Balmain look. Make sure to give yourself a healthy glow by using an all-over bronze like that was inspired by Diane Von Fustenberg and Hash.

So with that, I hope you found this useful as I have. If you feel you’re not being taken seriously enough even though you “own” your work…

Try freshening up and changing up your look with these power dressing tips. It may make a difference!

Eunice herself of course has another edge though. She has that added bit of mystique effect of an older Wednesday from the Addams family. How she manages to pull that off and still look trendy, sexy, and someone to be taken seriously is something to be admired.

Preview has it’s own popular website stylebible.ph and 45,000 followers on its Facebook page. Lucero’s Twitter is @eunichiban

  • Real People, Real Voices: Q&A with Keith Dumpangol

Ladies and gentleman, I want you to meet my friend Keith Dumpangol from Keningau, Sabah, Malaysia. He’s the male recipient contestant of the Breeze Magazine CORE’s Get Fit Challenge 3, where he was voted to be put on a fitness program for 3 months to get healthy at Core Fitness. I managed to steal some of his time to ask a few questions about what he hopes to achieve on the programme. So let’s all cheer him on!

    [wide]keith[/wide]

    934022_606946535996665_1636270375_n

    1) How do you feel about being selected for the Core Fit Challenge?
A: I feel excited! I think I’m in a ‘moment’ now where I’m mentally and physically ready for this challenge.

    2) What was your highest weight?
A: I was at my highest at 164kg! That was almost 4 years ago. Worst. Feeling. Ever.

    3) How much do you weigh now?
    A: As of yesterday I’m at 132.6kg

    4) What did you do to lose weight before?
A: I signed up for a gym membership and just started eating healthy. My first trip to the gym lasted me 10 minutes. Literally. 1 minute walking from my car to the gym, 5 minutes walking on the threadmill ( before I thought I’d pass out), 3 minutes of rest and 1 minute walking back to my car..LOL. And at the same time I started eating my Mickey Mouse diet.. you know, where you picture Mickey’s face on a plate. Fill his face with veggies and fill his two round ears with equal amount of carbs and protein. That’s how I started.

    5) What do you hope to achieve with Core Fit Challenge?
A: For this particular challenge, since it’s only for 3 months, I’m planning to push myself (without going overboard lah) to lose as much weight as I can. I’ve basically set a goal of how much I want to lose so I’m going to work on that. If I reach my target, great and if I don’t, it’s still progress At the same time I hope to inspire other people who are dealing with their own weight problem to take that first step and take control!

    6) What’s your goal weight?
A: I have never set a golden number on that to be honest. In the future, I might but for now I just want to go through this journey with a sense of achieving something.

    7) What is the most difficult thing to overcome personally?
A: I guess consistency is pretty much on top of the list. A friend said to me fitness is not just a goal, it’s a lifestyle. Needless to say, I’m still working on that.

    8. What drives you to get healthy?
A: Besides looking and feeling good? Well unfortunately I have family who passed at a relatively young age. And I myself am a diabetic. So I’m trying my best to break that chain. That’s what motivates me not to just lose weight but to BE HEALTHY

    9) Who do you look up to and why?
A: Too many to mention!!LOL. In terms of weight loss though, I’ve been following this guy Jon Calvo. He lost over 180 pounds on his own based on his own method and sheer determination.
    10.

    10) Favorite quote and why.
A: One of my favorites is simply “You cannot change what you refuse to confront” because it ain’t be any truer. If you don’t like it, change it!

  • Are you flowing in, or flowing out?

    [wide]Horseshoe_Bend_HDR[/wide] Photograph by J0ch3N89

Sometimes I forget that while I’m a permahappy tropical island-bred Brady Buncher with high-brow tastes and low-brow needs, I’m also a Gotham-infused badass with a geekcore and a penchant for literary expressionism.

I try to kill that complex character in favor of a simpler life experience — you know, for one that people look happy being and doing. So craft a more marketable and commercially-acceptable personal brand I do (as to not stick out), but when I am left with nothing else but my heart, mind and soul to fend for itself, I see glimpses of the person I try to snub out…

That undefinable, un-categorizable, other-culture subject, dressed-in-conventional-clothing humanoid forcing herself to be normal, when what I really am, is anything but. When I’m reminded of this, everything that happened or is happening begins to make complete sense.

Someone once said I’m too fluid to hold, but rivers flow just fine along its banks.

Maybe I’ve been looking for containers to flow into, when what I ought to be doing is just flow… outward.

Then maybe one day, I’ll see that I’m a river that has carved a bank to guide my stream.

What about you? Are you flowing in or flowing out?

P/S: This piece is inspired by this track.

  • Spring Cleaning: Detoxing My Body, My Life

It’s been a while. I had been too busy to write a post, though I’ve recently gotten a bit more active on Instagram. May is even busier, and going into June I will be here and there, and everywhere. So I figured I’d fit in a quick one before two more months pass.

A year back, I was so caught up in the hype of my weight loss that I forgot to share that one of the major reasons the weight was able to melt off (it wasn’t possible before no matter how hard I worked out and controlled my diet), was that I went through a 7-day elimination detox and rejuvenation program — twice.

    daynight

It’s important to note that I have fluctuated between 68kg – 71kg depending on my dietary habits and activity level over the past 6 months. I was going through a rollercoaster ride with a life challenge, and must admit I indulged in foods I liked while I was on holiday. However, I thank God I didn’t wake up back at 85 kg when I realized some battles are better left to, well, God.

    [wide]MAY17[/wide]

Now it’s a year later, and I’m at the end of my 2nd day detox while writing this post. This time around, my body reacted a lot faster, possibly due to the fact that my body isn’t quite as toxic as it was a year back.

    Carrots and carrot juice

    DAY 1
My healing reactions happened mostly in the first day, with aches on the left side of my neck, sudden itching on my face, and waking up in the middle of the night because I felt uneasy.

    DAY 2
Today though, things moved into the emotional as my body goes through the process of resetting itself. The general malaise from the sudden change of diet makes me feel a little less like myself, and a little more like what I imagine someone would feel on 10 cups of coffee a day while running on 2 hours of sleep the night before. I feel wired but tired.

This feeling is not new. I felt this way on both my detoxes last year too, but to be honest I forgot how that felt like until today. I was also a little paranoid in a hypochondriac way for part of the day, because I just felt so insecure about what was happening and wanted to make sure they weren’t signs of trouble.

But today, the stiffness in my joints are completely gone. My limbs are pliable, my usually dry-skin has retained it’s moisture from the 15 drinks I have a day, and the annoyingly stiff nose I’m super aware of has gone softer. It sounds ridiculous that I notice stupid things like these, but they’re incredibly annoying to breath through a nose that feels like it’s made of rubber – when it isn’t.

I have no idea what causes that, but I know the detox changes things on the cellular level as I flood it with raw juices and have my glutathione production go up by 600%, using a method I’d prefer not to plaster all over the internet. If you want to know, you can write me.

My smile lines have dimished from view, and my skin is so hydrated – but I feel a little vulnerable. Like a carnivore who has had all her teeth pulled out, and made to go on liquid and baby food diet.

But I know, as I have experienced in the past, that good things come to those who wait patiently with positive expectation.

So bring it on DAY 3!

  • How To Use Makeup Like a Pro Without Paying Pro

[wide]vshape[/wide] This afternoon, I saw my dad and bro for the first time since I learned some kickass makeup skills in Manila.

“Wow, you look different… like a Hong Kong film star now!,” dad said.

My bro concedes by saying with a smirk, “Yea, now you know how to use makeup!”

    It felt great! 😀

I was at Greenbelt last night (Manila) at the Beauty Bar looking for a set of brushes, because the Korean Palgantong brush I bought from Hong Kong (it’s awesome BTW) somehow got lost during the Makeover Contest I was involved in on Sunday afternoon.

Problem is, the brushes there were Japonesque professional brushes that were selling at PHP 1,000 – PHP 2,500 (About RM 80-200) per brush.

Firstly, the handles were too long for self application and secondly they were way too expensive for a newbie like me. I might look into ultimate pro brushes as I get more serious, but for now, I kind of just need entry level brushes that are shaped right and don’t scratch my face. You know, brushes to learn with!

    Budget Tools

Thank goodness I made the right decision to hold off on the purchase because, today I stumbled upon that new Magicboo makeup supplies store on Gaya Street (Kota Kinabalu). I ended up spending merely RM27.50 (PHP 364.50) on 5 pro Chinese brushes!!! Isn’t that crazy cheap?
    malian
To be honest, the quality’s not bad at first analysis. I might even get a second set if they hold up well. They are soft to the touch, and while I can’t verify this the store owner said the black ones are natural?! Anyhow, they feel pro enough for me even if they’re an unbelievable bargain.

    Reasonably Priced Makeup

Generally, I won’t tell you to use cheap makeup over the pharmacy counter, because of irritants and carcinogens. For example, I’ve used eyeliners that sting, and blushers that make me go into a sneezing fit even though they come from reputable brands. I find that this happens a lot less with dermatologically tested, natural products.

Usually, I go for high quality makeup that are organic or natural, which usually cost a lot more than commercial makeup brands. But there are good quality stuff out there that are priced reasonably, are good to use like Carnival, and without harmful chemicals like Human Nature (Philippines) (great for SE Asian skin with brown undertones).

These days the makeup industry is very competitive, and a lot of brands and starting to eliminate harmful ingredients from their products for market positioning so you’re in good luck.

    juicebeauty

Korean brands like The Face Shop, Holika Holika, and Etude House tend to carry colours that are more suitable for Oriental skin, whereas The Body Shop is an all around good place to start if you want to look great at an affordable price for any skin color.

Saying that, to be absolutely honest, I do find that premium quality makeup has a much smoother finish and feels better on my skin because of the nourishing ingredients in them.

I personally use Artistry, Dr. Hauschka, Juice Beauty, and also 100% Pure. The trend so far seems to be safe Organic American, German, Japanese, and high quality Korean beauty products.

Since I don’t like to apply thick makeup on, it’s imperative that the coverage I get is good even if I don’t slap on layers of it.

    Makeup Essentials

There’s another way to keep your makeup tab low, and still use the best of the best items. This is getting too long so I’ll cover that in Part 2. Stay tuned 🙂
